US DOJ charges 2 Russians with laundering over 600k Bitcoin

The U.S. Division of Justice has charged two Russians, Alexey Bilyuchenko and Aleksandr Verner, for conspiring to launder 647,000 Bitcoin (BTC) stolen from their hack of Mt. Gox in 2011, in accordance with a June 9 statement.

The DOJ accused them of utilizing their unauthorized entry to Mt. Gox servers to switch BTC to wallets managed by them and their co-conspirators between 2011 and 2014.

Moreover, the DOJ is charging Bilyuchenko and Alexander Vinnik for conspiring to function BTC-E. This crypto change was shut down in 2017 by the authorities as a result of it facilitated methods for criminals to switch, launder, and retailer their legal proceeds.

The assistant legal professional normal of DOJ’s legal division, Kenneth A. Well mannered, Jr mentioned the accused had used their legal proceeds from the Mt. Gox hack to start “the infamous BTC-e digital forex change, which laundered funds for cybercriminals worldwide.”

He added:

“These indictments spotlight the division’s unwavering dedication to convey to justice dangerous actors within the cryptocurrency ecosystem and forestall the abuse of the monetary system.”

The case can be tried in two jurisdictions, the Southern District of New York (SDNY) and the Northern District of California (NDCA).
